How to Regulate Your Nervous System During the Holiday Stress Spiral

Dec 01, 2025

The holidays are marketed like a Hallmark movie — soft lighting, smiling families, simmering cider in slow motion.

Your body, meanwhile, is responding like it’s entering a live-combat emotional arena.

Because the truth is — the holidays aren’t just about celebration.
They are about people.
And people bring nervous system chaos.

Aunt Linda’s passive aggression.
The pressure to be emotionally available to 27 different people.
Your own tendency to say “yes, I can bring three homemade pies” when your brain is already melting.

If your body goes into fight/flight before you even smell cinnamon — you’re not broken.
You’re human. And your nervous system is doing its job.

So here are 5 brain-smart, faith-anchored ways to stay regulated when the holidays try to hijack your peace.

Assume Your Nervous System Needs a Plan

(Not Just Your Calendar)

Most people prepare for the holidays logistically — menus, gift lists, travel plans —
but forget to prepare emotionally.

Ask your body a different question this year:

“What would make this season actually safe for me to experience — not just survive?”

Maybe that means leaving gatherings early.
Maybe it means planning a decompression morning-after.
Maybe it means not trying to hold everyone’s emotional temperature.

That’s not selfish. That’s regulated leadership.

Name Your Trigger Before It Names You

Your nervous system can’t heal what you won’t acknowledge.

  • Is your biggest stress being overstimulated?

  • Is it relational tension? (aka: “we don’t talk about 2021 and the casserole incident”)

  • Is it your over-functioning reflex that auto-volunteers you for everything?

Say it out loud:

“My biggest stress is __________.”

Naming it moves it from survival brain → executive brain, where solutions exist.

Build in Micro-Regulation Moments (Not Just One Dramatic Escape)

Don’t wait until you’re crying in the garage with pumpkin pie on your sweater.
Normalize nervous system MICRO-breaks.

Examples:

  • Step outside for 2 minutes and breathe cold air

  • Put both hands under cold water or splash cold water on your face.

  • Slow chew something — literally signals safety to the brain

  • Excuse yourself to “grab something from the car” (translation: re-regulate in the driveway)

These are not signs of weakness.
These are signs of emotional intelligence.

Reserve Emotional Energy Like Money

(Yes, Jesus left parties early sometimes)

Your emotional capacity is not infinite.
And just because you are capable of carrying everyone does not mean you are called to.

Ask this before you say yes to anything:

“Will this cost me peace I cannot afford — and will it steal presence from the things that matter more?”

Even Jesus didn’t heal every person who asked. He often withdrew.
Rest isn’t ungodly. It’s Christlike.

Anchor to Something Deeper Than the Atmosphere

The strongest regulation isn’t found in peppermint tea — it’s found in presence.

Not just quiet.
Sacred connection.

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast,
because they trust in You.” — Isaiah 26:3

Peace is not the absence of stress.
It is the presence of God inside it.

The holidays don’t need you to be superhuman.
They need you to be regulated, present, and spiritually rooted.

Because nervous system peace is not just personal survival —
it’s generational leadership.
